Do You Need A Crown Or A Filling?

When you develop cavities, uncomfortable symptoms and serious complications can eventually develop. You will then require restorative treatment to address the decay and restore your tooth to full function and health. Which of our restorative options will best address your decay? Do you need a crown or a filling?

What Causes Tooth Decay?

How does a cavity form? First, harmful bacteria must be allowed to bypass the protective layer of tooth enamel. This can happen as a result of injury, such as a chip or fracture. In addition, poor oral hygiene can lead to enamel erosion, providing access to the sensitive inner layers of dentin. Finally, foods and drinks high in sugar and other starches (candy, chips, soda, energy drinks, sports drinks, fruit juice) can increase the likelihood of decay forming.

Do I Need Treatment?

Once decay forms, treatment is necessary to avoid the risk of an eventual infection. In the early stages you may notice a toothache or tooth sensitivity to hot or cold foods/drinks. Always see your dentist when you encounter discomfort. We also suggest seeing the dentist once every six months for a checkup and cleaning, which allows the doctor to catch the earliest possible warning signs of decay and treat the problem before you experience serious discomfort.

Fillings vs. Dental Crowns

For most cavities we place a filling, made from a metal-free and lifelike composite resin. However, should the decay have progressed we can place a dental crown. The restoration fits over the visible portion of the teeth, protecting the remaining structure from bacteria. Which option we choose will depend on the cause and severity of your tooth decay.
