American Diabetes Association Alert Day

The American Diabetes Association spends the fourth Tuesday of each March trying to raise awareness about diabetes. Many people don’t realize that with a few simple lifestyle changes, they can reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The American Diabetes Association offers a free Diabetes Risk Test that people can take online. Simply answer a few easy questions to discover whether or not you’re particularly vulnerable to developing diabetes. The test can be found on the American Diabetes Association’s webpage: http://www.diabetes.org and on their Facebook page. The American Diabetes Association also provides an array of promotional materials, including banners and posters, in both English and Spanish.

The Link Between Gum Disease and Diabetes

Gum disease occurs as a result of gum inflammation brought on by the presence of bacteria. Over time, bacteria cause plaque buildup, which leads to inflammation. If left untreated, the gums may begin to pull away from the tooth, forming pockets at the gum line. Once bacteria invade these pockets, gum disease starts. Patients with gum disease report sore, swollen gums, gums that bleed easily, and loose teeth. In some cases, patients may experience tooth loss. Patients with diabetes have an especially high risk of developing gum disease since diabetes thickens blood vessels, which hinders your body’s ability to fight the bacterial infection that causes periodontal disease.
