When you hear the words “gum disease,” what comes to your mind? Perhaps you think of gingivitis (the inflammation of the gums). Oftentimes, people tend to think of gingivitis as a rash for the mouth and as something not too threatening. However, gum disease is a serious threat to your oral health, and if it is left untreated, it can ravage the mouth, causing large scale tooth loss. To learn more about gum disease and how to recognize it, read the description below from your Ankeny IA dentist, Dr. Amanda Foust.
The Development of Gum Disease
Gum disease is ultimately the result of bacteria. Oftentimes, it will result from the presence of harmful bacteria on teeth near the gum line. If left to their own devices, these bacteria can make their way beneath the gums, where they can begin to cause serious problems. If they result in inflammation, it is known as gingivitis.
However, even though gingivitis sounds like something that is merely uncomfortable, it is a serious problem. The trouble is that the immune system finds it very hard to rid itself of gingivitis because the bacteria responsible for the disease trigger the body’s production of anti-inflammatory molecules known as IL-10. These molecules, in turn, interfere with the body’s bacteria-fighting T-cells, allowing gingivitis to linger and progress into periodontitis, a more damaging form of gum disease that attacks the structures that support teeth. Without intervention, periodontitis can inflict significant damage on these structures, loosening teeth and eventually causing tooth loss.
