One of the best things about working at Dental Impressions of Ankeny is the opportunity to meet so many interesting, inspiring people of all ages and backgrounds. We love hearing about compassionate, creative individuals who, like us, work hard to bring about positive changes in the lives of others. Along with Dr. Amanda Foust, a family dentist in Ankeny IA, we’re making a commitment to focus on the positive.
Is There a Relationship Between Oral Health and Optimism?
Certainly, says Dr. Foust. Studies have shown that children whose parents display a proactive, positive view of oral hygiene typically have healthier teeth and gums. Without regularly scheduled office visits and an established oral hygiene regimen, you and your children have a higher risk of gum disease, oral cancer, and tooth loss. Many of our young patients respond more strongly to short-term benefits and positive motivation than to long-term benefits and scare tactics. For example, your four-year-old will not likely appreciate the fact that adult teeth don’t grow back if lost to gum disease. He will, however, understand that toothaches and cavities keep him from enjoying his favorite foods, friends, and activities. Children also relish the chance to help others in a more “grown-up” capacity, and they thrive on recognition of a job weSll done.
How Can You Help a Child You’ve Never Met?
It’s an interesting question and the driving force behind Geri and Eric Cope’s Smile Squared program. During a trip to Guatemala in 2010, the husband-and-wife team witnessed the devastation that occurs when children lack access to running water and toothbrushes. Eric notes that impoverished families cannot afford dental hygiene products, nor do they have the luxury of purchasing nutritious foods. As a result, children with fewer than ten cavities are the exception rather than the rule.
The business model patterns itself on the “one for one” donation model made popular by Warby Parker and TOMS shoes. When you purchase a toothbrush on the Smile Squared website, or at participating drugstores, the company donates a second toothbrush to a child in need. When you teach your child to care for his teeth, you may very well be helping another child on the other side of the world! If that isn’t a good reason to practice excellent oral hygiene, we don’t’ know what is.
