Have we diagnosed you with a tooth that has incurred severe injury but that does not require an extraction? Has tooth decay caused damage too serious for a filling? When your tooth requires extra protection and support, we may suggest a dental crown to offer structural integrity and coverage. While you may have a general idea about what you can expect from crowns, we encourage you to look over the following questions and explanations for a clearer picture of what this restorative treatment has to offer:
Your Frequently Asked Crown Questions
Question: Does a crown cover my entire tooth?
Answer: Yes. A crown is often referred to as a “cap” because it is hollow, in the shape of a tooth, and fits over your natural tooth.
Question: Will you make a custom-fitted crown for me?
Answer: Yes. We will first take impressions of your top and bottom teeth, which we will send to a dental lab where a skilled technician will create your crown. In the meantime, you will wear a temporary crown. When the custom-made one is complete, we will fit it permanently over your tooth, while making final adjustments to ensure your bite is comfortable.
Question: What types of dental crowns do you offer?
Answer: We offer all-ceramic, PFM (porcelain-fused-to-metal), and metal crowns.
Question: How do you decide which type of crown to place?
Answer: We decide based on aesthetics as well as the location of the tooth in your mouth. For instance, for visible teeth in the front of your mouth, we often suggest porcelain for a beautiful, natural appearance. For back teeth, which chew and bear a lot of pressure, we may suggest either PFM or metal, depending on their visibility and how much strength they need. Metal provides the greatest amount of support, which is important for teeth used in chewing.
