Brushing: A Few Things To Avoid

When you’re making every effort to provide your smile with optimal dental hygiene, it can be quite disheartening to end up with a cavity, sensitivity, or any other sign that something isn’t quite right with your home care. We encourage you to take a moment to focus on your brushing. With the help of a few tips of things to avoid during hygiene sessions, you may find that making a few key adjustments can make all the difference in the world.

#1: Too-Hard Brushing

Don’t brush too hard! As a matter of fact, don’t brush hard at all. While you may have been told to “use some elbow grease” by applying pressure to clean dishes or the floor when you were growing up, the same does not apply to your smile. Skip the scouring pads and vigorous scrubbing and – instead – focus on thorough, gentle cleansing. Two minutes with a light approach will serve your dental hygiene well.

#2: Too-Hard Bristles

Keeping in line with the “gentle” thinking, it’s important that you avoid anything that can potentially damage or irritate your smile. This includes saying goodbye to a toothbrush with hard bristles or medium bristles. Instead, protect your oral health by practicing dental hygiene with a soft-bristle toothbrush.

#3: Abrasive Toothpaste

Last but certainly not least, you can avoid discomfort, sensitivity, and damaged tooth surfaces by avoiding abrasive toothpaste. True, abrasive ingredients may seem like the logical choice, but they can do more harm than good. Stick with toothpaste that contains fluoride but does not contain gritty ingredients.
