You might be aware of the fact that there are traditional dental cleanings and deep cleanings. However, beyond the fact that there are two main types of cleanings, you may not know much more about which one you need, the differences between the two, etc. To help you feel more educated regarding your preventive care and your periodontal health, we are more than happy to provide answers to common questions about this topic. Remember, if you come up with additional questions, let us know during your next visit!
Questions and Answers
Question: Can you explain a little bit to me about deep cleanings?
Answer: Yes. This is a dental cleaning for patients who are suffering from gum disease. When your gingival tissue becomes inflamed, it pulls away from your teeth, forming “pockets.” Plaque and tartar stick to your teeth and build up within these pockets. You can’t clean this area thoroughly, so inflammation and disease continue to advance. That is, until we remove plaque and tartar, smooth damaged dental tissue, and clean your smile with an advanced cleaning.
Question: So, how do I know if I need a deep cleaning or a traditional one?
Answer: Your preventive care visits include a thorough exam. If we diagnose you with gum disease, we will tell you that a traditional cleaning will not suffice.
Question: Does a deep cleaning require just one visit?
Answer: Since we are carefully yet thoroughly cleaning beneath your gumline, this is a lengthier process than a traditional cleaning. We usually address one quadrant of your mouth per visit, so it may take four visits until completion.
