Now, let us help you make sense of things, so you can feel excited about improving your oral health.
Is It Periodontal Disease Or Is It Gum Disease?
You may wonder what to say when you’re talking about why you need periodontal treatment. Is the problem periodontal disease? Or is it gum disease? Aren’t they the exact same thing? The answer: The terms are interchangeable. Here’s the extra stuff you probably want to know for clarification:
- Gum refers to the soft tissue that frames your teeth
- Your periodontium includes all of the supportive tissues that help your teeth remain in place, including gums, ligaments, bone, and more
- Gingivitis is the inflammatory disease of just your gum tissue (gingiva); periodontitis is the more advanced form of the disease that affects not only your gums (gingival tissue) but also your bone
Why Can’t I Just Use A Special Mouthwash?
You can use a mouthwash preventively to help keep your smile clean if you are also brushing and flossing and receiving dental cleanings. We may also suggest one after periodontal treatment. You cannot cure a problem with a special mouthwash, however, because it will not remove the main cause of your gum disease: Accumulated plaque and tartar. This requires a deep cleaning and possibly additional periodontal treatment.
