Are you someone whose smile includes those tissue-covered bony growths that are known as tori? If so, you may occasionally find yourself with questions about what to do about these. Not sure what we’re talking about? If you run your tongue along the lingual surface just beneath your tongue (where your roots are located), do you feel any bumps? How about on the roof of your mouth? Now try near your upper molars on the outside. When bone continues to grow, it develops into benign bumps, each of which is a torus. While they’re generally perfectly fine and not an issue, there are, of course, exceptions. Let’s talk about them!
Tip: Removal May Be Essential For Dentures, Etc.
If you’re in need of something like a denture, retainer, or something for which tori are in the way, then we may need to suggest removal. Not to worry, it’s an outpatient procedure!
Tip: Keep Them Clean With Daily Hygiene
Even if you accidentally scrape your tori because you eat rough food or your toothbrush slips, you don’t need to seek any extra dental care help (of course, unless you’re in serious pain or the problem does not go away). Generally speaking, as long as you keep your mouth clean, you’ll be just fine! Remember to use fluoridated, ADA-approved toothpaste to thoroughly brush your teeth. Add an antibacterial mouth rinse in just to be sure you’re getting the extra tissue clean, too.
