Inflammation: What To Do?

Inflamed tissues often show up in your smile when your oral health is having a problem. Or, when you’ve managed to cause some serious inflammation! While figuring out why this is going on and how to fix the cause once and for all is something you should leave in our skilled hands, that doesn’t mean you have to suffer until you see us. To the contrary, we happily offer up a bunch of information that will help alleviate your immediate swelling and discomfort until you’re resting safely in our dental chair!

Take An NSAID (For Now)

Take an over-the-counter NSAID like ibuprofen if you are in pain and you’re experiencing inflamed tissue and you really need additional relief. This will address both issues until we can see you.

Use A Saltwater Rinse

“But what can I put on my inflamed tissue?” you may wonder. As you are likely aware, you shouldn’t start messing around with your gums or other soft tissues since you don’t know what’s wrong. However, you can very easily keep the area nice and clean and reduce some swelling when you combine water and salt and rinse throughout the day.

Leave It Alone

Did we mention leaving the problem alone? Where swelling is present, any additional disruption of the tissue can lead to more swelling and more discomfort. You have our strong suggestion to be gentle and to give the site a break.

Avoid Hot Foods

Heat makes inflamed tissues worse. Eat and drink only cool or lukewarm foods and beverages for the time being!

Try A Cold Compress

This is a very easy and very effective way to address your inflamed tissues! A cold pack against your face (don’t let ice directly sit against skin) will work wonders.
