February Family Fun: Keeping Smiles Healthy!

The lovely and heart-filled month of February is just about here, which means everyone has spring (and visions of candy) on their minds. What can you do, you wonder, to soar through the month with your family while having tons of fun and while avoiding the oral health consequences that you worry about, especially with Valentine’s Day around the corner? Fortunately, your family dentist in Ankeny, IA has some good ideas!

Smile-Safe Valentine’s Day Fun

Of course, most of the Valentine’s Day treats that fill the shelves of your local grocery store (and the treats your kiddos will receive from friends) are going to include lots of sugar. As you know, smiles that become saturated in sugar are more likely to develop cavities! Rather than contribute to an already sweet-filled day, spend some time as a family enjoying a fun activity that is sugarless for a celebration that’s neutral for your oral health! Your family dentist suggests watching a love-filled movie, sitting down to make Valentines for friends or family members, or even cutting cheese or fruit into heart shapes … get creative together!

National Children’s Dental Health Month Time!

A quick reminder about one of your family dentist’s favorite February observances: It’s National Children’s Dental Health Month! So, spend some time as a family talking about your smiles, schedule the care you and your kids needs, head out to buy new flavors of toothpaste together. Whatever gets the conversation going!

Bubble Gum Day!

It’s going to happen on the first Friday in February, the same time it happens every year. It’s Bubble Gum Day! Check to see if your child’s school is participating (the intention is for kids to be able to donate 50 cents to a good cause on this day in exchange for chewing gum in school). If so, then make sure your kiddo has a couple quarters on hand. If not, you can still enjoy gum as a family! But shouldn’t I teach my kids to avoid gum, you may think to yourself? Actually, chewing sugarless gum is safe (for kids who are old enough not to swallow it) and beneficial for your oral health! Chew for about 20 minutes after snacks to cleanse your smile.
