Have you decided that what you’re going to do in order to get rid of the stains that are making your smile look much less attractive is brush better? Maybe you figure you should brush harder. Or, if you’re like many of our Ankeny, IA patients, you decide that if you start using some sort of whitening toothpaste, it should do the trick. Unfortunately, though we appreciate your intentions and your best efforts, we remind you that you’re on a path toward potentially harming your smile (if you try to whiten it by brushing) without being able to look forward to the teeth whitening you were hoping to see! Let us explain why this isn’t your best approach (and, of course, what you should do instead).
#1: Whitening Toothpastes Don’t Do Much
First, let’s talk about whitening toothpastes. They’re not going to provide you with that whiter smile you could achieve with teeth whitening. In fact, they’re not going to do much at all. In terms of seemingly safe, non-abrasive options, you might notice that the toothpaste helps you get your teeth clean and it removes the pigments that have been sitting on your teeth throughout the day (however, with that said, any toothpaste will do this!). Now, as for the abrasive stuff, such as whitening pastes with baking soda or charcoal toothpaste, it’s not safe. It won’t yield exceptional brightening. It will, however, lead to the damage and erosion of your enamel (which is the outer layer of your teeth that you really need for oral health and protection).
#2: You May End Up Over-Brushing
Now, onto what happens when you’re using your usual, everyday toothpaste but you’ve decided that you’re going to brush your stains away. Of course, you will have noticed that your usual twice-daily brushing has not yielded magnificent brightening. So, you may brush more frequently, longer, harder, etc. The problem? You won’t end up with vibrant teeth. Again, you will end up with damage (and you may irritate your gums, too). Skip this!
