If your mouth tends to feel like it’s been stuffed full of cotton when you wake up in the morning or if you simply notice it’s very dry in there throughout the day, this can actually become counterproductive to your oral health. Even if you practice exceptional dental hygiene, if you don’t have enough saliva in your mouth, you’re going to end up with some dental health issues. Why is this? Let’s talk a bit more about promoting effective care by ensuring you’re not dealing with dry mouth.
About Your Saliva
Your saliva is very important! While you might think that drool or spit is a bit yucky, it’s there for some very important reasons. Without it, you may end up with a condition called “dry mouth,” which is just what it seems. Your mouth becomes deficient in moisture because of a decrease in saliva. Sometimes, this is because you’re congested or something else is causing you to breathe through your mouth instead of your nose (and all of that air intake dries the moisture out). In other instances, taking certain types of medication may be the culprit. Whatever the case, keep the following in mind:
- Saliva helps to promote effective dental hygiene by flushing away bacteria while you’re away from your toothbrush, floss, and paste
- When adequate saliva is not present, bacteria remain in place, where their increasing populations lead to halitosis, gum inflammation, decay, and more
