Have you ever had a cavity before? Perhaps you’ve never had one, so you have no idea what to expect of your upcoming dental filling. Maybe you already have fillings but you either have amalgam or composite, so you’re not feeling too certain about which is the best for you. In many cases, the main concern from our patients includes what the filling is going to look like once placed. Allow us to offer some explanations, so you have a better idea of what you may look forward to.
If It’s Amalgam
If you choose a silver amalgam filling, the dental filling itself will be something you can see within your tooth. We will be replacing the tissue that’s missing (as a result of your cavity), which means the replacement is going to look like a dark greyish silver. If the tooth experiencing decay is in the very back of your smile, chances are good nobody is going to see this when you grin. However, for visible teeth, you can often see the filling through your tooth because it is dark (and your tissue is translucent), so the filling may darken your tooth.
If It’s Tooth-Colored Composite
Now, if you choose a tooth-colored dental filling composed of composite, the color of the material will match your tooth (we will customize it). As a result, you’ll be able to see the filling but you won’t be able to tell it apart from your tooth. It won’t show through your tooth, either. Instead, your tooth will look like the cavity has been treated and like your tooth is new again. This is particularly helpful for visible teeth. Remember, though, that you may typically select either material regardless of the tooth’s location in your smile.
