When you have little ones, you hear all sorts of things about protecting their health, things that could go wrong, things you should be doing, and the list continues. If you have been talking about fluorosis and your child’s smile with a friend or relative, then you may suddenly find that you’re full of questions. This is not a problem! What Ages Does This Affect?
Fluorosis is typically a problem that affects kids whose permanent teeth are still developing, which generally suggests anywhere from the birth of your child up through the age of eight.
Why Does It Only Affect Younger Kids?
Fluorosis is something that affects younger children and then is no longer a threat for older kids, teens, or adults because it is strictly a condition that impacts teeth that are growing within gingival tissue. This doesn’t affect erupted teeth.
What Is It?
Fluorosis is a condition that can cause your child’s teeth to look stained. If your child were to ingest more than the safe amount of fluoride over time, the enamel is negatively impacted. Very mild stains look like white streaks. More serious staining may appear brown. Pitting may also occur if the issue is severe.
Should I Worry?
We don’t suggest you spend time worrying about this condition because it is entirely easy to prevent. It’s simply a matter of keeping kids from ingesting excessive amounts of fluoride. How to do so? Stick to the following:
- Monitor brushing sessions; don’t let kids swallow paste! Ensure they spit it out.
- Don’t provide your children with any type of additional fluoride (pill form, mouthwash, etc.) unless we recommend it.
- Do schedule your children’s visits every six months, so we may monitor fluoride intake for you!
